Spring 2008 Progress Energy Water Resources Seminar Water Allocation Law in Southeastern States 1:30-3:30 pm The Southeastern Water World: Where Are We, How Did We Get Here, & Where Are We Going? Purpose: These workshops are structured to educate and familiarize design professionals on the NC Sedimentation Pollution Control Act (SPCA), the rules implementing the Act, and design standards for erosion and sedimentation control best management practices (BMPs). Who Should Attend? Professional Engineers, Surveyors, Landscape Architects and others who design Erosion and Sedimentation Control Plans. Credits: 12 PDHs will be available to professional engineers and land surveyors, and 10 continuing education hours for landscape architects upon completion of one of these workshops. All NCWRA meetings occur on Mondays at 11:30 am at the McKimmon Center, NC State University, Raleigh, NC. April 7, 2008 Greening Development to Protect Watersheds: Can Urban Land Use Planning Make a Difference? Speaker: Philip R. Berke, PhD, Professor of City and Regional Planning and Director, Center for Sustainable Community Design, Institute for the Environment, UNC Chapel Hill Haphazard and unplanned urbanization is a major cause of watershed degradation. Dr. Berke will present new thinking on integrating watershed protection and urban land use planning to improve watershed protection. He will first discuss the role of c ompact urban form as a more environmentally sustainable form of development that can potentially advance watershed protection. Then he will review how urban land use planning tools can be used to raise public awareness about watershed protection issues and facilitate integration watershed protection practices into urban development decision making. This forum will provide 1 PDH (professional development hours) for professional engineers and surveyors, authorized by the NC Board of Examiners for Engineers and Surveyors.
