Calling All Artists! Donate Original “Postcard” Work

10 February 2009

Open letter to ALL Faculty, Staff, Students and Alumni of the College of Design

To celebrate the 60th Anniversary of the College of Design, the Department of Art and Design faculty are sponsoring a Silent Auction of original “Art Postcards” at the official Anniversary Celebration on the weekend of 3-4 April 2009.

Your invitation: We invite all faculty, staff, students, and alumni to participate by donating a hand made or personally generated “Art Postcard.” We will exhibit and then auction off all of the postcards during the official 60th Celebration weekend, April 3-4, 2009. All proceeds will benefit the Department of Art and Design excellence fund for students.

Here is what to do if you would like to participate

Make a postcard: All postcards must measure 4.25” x 6”. Only those that are the correct size be used. We use the term “postcard” loosely. It does not have to be paper or cardstock. Your postcard may be made of any material or combination of materials, and employ any techniques, hand or digital. However, it must be relatively flat—as if it were going to be sent through the mail. So, if you have an idea for a 3D postcard, it must collapse to flat easily and it will be exhibited in flattened form. You may contribute more than one postcard. You may place imagery or text on the back, but only the front will be exhibited.

The postcard may be oriented horizontally or vertically.

View the Silent Auction Postcard Gallery online for examples of current submissions.

Fill out the attached Donor Information Form to send with the postcard: Please complete one of the attached identification forms for EACH postcard you submit. If you are sending your contribution from a distance, please place your postcard and the completed Donor Information Form(s) in an (padded) envelope or shallow box for mailing. Please DO NOT send your postcards unprotected through the US Postal Service! The idea of “postcard” is conceptual only; not to be tested by real life handling!

Deadline for receipt of postcards: March 25, 2009.

Exhibition and bidding: All of the donated postcards will be exhibited together on the walls in the Belk Rotunda in Brooks Hall for the auction. There will be a minimum bid price of $25. on all postcards. By submitting an Art Postcard, you thereby agree to donate the postcard to the Department of Art and Design, NCSU, and agree to leave any works that remain unsold after being offered at the auction with the department for future fund raising endeavors.

A further plan: We intend to scan or photograph all of the postcards as they arrive at the College and to preserve the collection as a catalog on CD, if funding permits. Your donation of the postcard will indicate that you agree to have your postcard included in a digital catalog of the exhibition, and perhaps offered for sale.

We look forward to seeing your entry—-and hope you will decide to attend the festivities on the first weekend in April.

Thank you.

Sincerely,

Susan Brandeis, Kathleen Rieder, Dana Raymond, Lope Max Diaz
