Creating Art to Wear There was no doubt among the crowd that the Collection: Art to Wear 2007 fashion show was going to be a showstopper. Music pumped, bulbs flashed, models in gravity-defying updos and heels checked the crowd from backstage.
All students of NC State's Colleges of Design and Textiles, 15 fashion designers produced and presented the annual, juried show. Liz Morrison, a senior earning a dual degree in art and design and textile technology, talked about preparing for the Raleigh runway and her summer internship with New York fashion designer Anna Sui.
Next year's Art to Wear event is scheduled for April 10 at 8 p.m. in the Court of North Carolina.

WithIt 2007 Mentoring Day Jenna Eason, Meghan Holliday, Liz Morrison, Jessica Roush, Katelyn Sexton
Students were paired with a female industry executive for a day of education and insight to the furniture industry. Each student had the opportunity to tour showrooms, network with industry executives and learn about the dynamics of the Market. This was an excellent opportunity to see classroom concepts put into application, such as product branding and licensing, use of price points and retail mark-up implementation. Mentors readily answered student questions and gave career advice.

Scholastics Art and Writing Competition
Each year the Scholastics Art and Writing Competition accepts works from both areas of study from high school students located all over the United States. For the art portion, students send in however many pieces of work that they wish to their regional judging area (North Carolina has two regions, East and West.) There, jurors review each piece of work and decide whether to award the piece. Those that they select receive either a Silver Key or Gold Key Award (I had three Gold Keys and one Silver.) From those Gold Keys selected, a few pieces (5, I think) are chosen as the "Best in Show." Those five are sent to New York, along with all of the other pieces that were chosen as "Best in Shows" from all over the US. There, jurors review all of those pieces and select one winner from eachregion, called the "American Visions Award." These pieces are displayed in the Scholastics Gallery in New York on Broadway for up to two years. Some are sent on a "tour" around the country. It was a big honor for Leigh, one of our Albers Scholars, to be chosen for this.
