Of the 136 graduates receiving awards, two received their doctoral degrees: Hyejung Chang and Andrew Payne. Thirty-nine earned their master’s degrees, 15 earned their professional bachelor of architecture degree and 80 received their baccalaureate degrees from the College of Design in commencement exercises held at 1:30 p.m. on Saturday, May 9, 2009, in Stewart Theatre in the university’s Talley Student Center.

After an introduction from Dean Marvin Malecha, Design Council Co-President Logan Sayles and Design Guild Vice President Craig McDuffie gave messages of congratulations. Then, students became graduates with their respective associate dean calling names and conferring degrees.

Dean Malecha presented the Dean’s Award winners with a Wings on Wings medallion. This year’s recipients were Brittany Davis (BID), Sarah Artuso (MLA) and Alberto Rigau (MGD). Read more here. Malecha also recognized Jacquelyn Nouveau, who graduated with a Master of Art and Design, who entered the program at age 75 in 2005.

Then Malecha presented 2009 Distinguished Alumnus William “Bill” Valentine, FAIA (B.Arch. 1960), CEO and design principal at Hellmuth, Obata + Kassabaum (HOK), with his distinguished alumnus medallion. Valentine then took the podium and spoke to the graduates.

After the ceremony, graduates and their friends and family members were invited to the college for a reception with faculty and staff.
