| Areas of Expertise |
The Design Research and Extension Program's areas of expertise are: Community Design, Design Visualization & Simulation. Land Use Planning Education, and Sustainable Design & Watershed Planning.
Community Design Community design and planning, participatory design, and project facilitation are topics of work in this area of expertise. Projects scope ranges from regional community visioning to site programming. The uses of participatory design techniques provide a framework for the community members to prioritize issues and build consensus. complete project listing
Design Visualization and Simulation Computer modeling techniques are used to visualize design ideas and to evaluate designs by potential users. Advanced techniques allow computer generated physical representations that can interact with the user in a simulated three-dimensional animated setting. The scale can range from the small product molecule to large-scale regional analysis. complete project listing
Land Use Planning and Education Using techniques of public participation and engagement, issues are analyzed in public settings enabling communities to better understand the purposes and limitations of the planning process and its tools. Emphasis is placed on tying together the local with the regional issues and resources. complete project listing
Sustainable Design & Watershed Planning Research is focused on hydrologic and pollution impacts related to land use/ land cover, impact reduction techniques using site design, and with a particular focus on coastal shellfish waters and bacterial contamination problems. Education and outreach activities include workshops and publications oriented to create awareness and understanding of problems and solutions that can be applied at both the regional and human scale. complete project listing |
