Murphy, NC: Downtown Revitalization Charrette >
The Town of Murphy and Cooperative Extension Services hosted a team of Landscape Architecture students from NC State and NC A&T to develop plans for the revitalization of Downtown Murphy.
Andrews, NC: Middle School Landscape Design Workshop >
A design workshop was conducted for the seventh graders at Andrews Middle School, focusing on designing the school's science garden. The purpose of this design workshop was to introduce the students to design issues and the design process as well as new techniques for design visualization.
New Bern, NC: Visioning Steetscapes and Neighborhoods >
This project focused on the potential changes to neighborhoods and commercial areas in and around New Bern, NC. Digital imaging techniques were used to create photo-realistic visualizations of the potential changes. Each change was "layered" in the image for that several options for the degree or implementation of the changes could be visualized.
Kinston, NC: Rebuilding Communities >
Many communities were devastated in the wake of Hurricane Floyd's merciless pounding of the North Carolina Coastal Plain. The College of Design’s Extension Program was contacted by the Governor's Rebuilding Task Force and canvassed the Departments of Landscape Architecture and Architecture seeking design assistance.


Design Visualization and Simulations

The VisionDome >
The VisionDome is an immersive, multi-user, single projection Virtual Reality environment. By combining computer generated 3-D models with advanced projection equipment, the VisionDome users are immersed in a 360 degree by 180 degree virtual environment. It allows designers and clients to interact in real-time with the proposed design.
A Comparison of Realities >
Will emerging digital representational tools change our design judgements and results? This research examines the impact of virtual reality representations on trained designer’s evaluative judgments by comparing conventional representational media to computer-generated simulations.
Airships and Instrument Packages >
This project was organized around a semester-long studio that combined the efforts of students from the departments of Industrial Design and Aerospace Engineering. One of the goals of this project was to improve the interaction between designers and engineers to create new and feasible ideas for a highly restricted environment. The assignment directed students to design an airship that could explore Mars, gather scientific data, and report the information back to Earth.

Triangle Visioning II: Alternative Development Forms Along River Corridors >
Phase two of this project focused on rural development along select rivers. Alternative development scenarios were visualized for sites on the Nuese River, the Little River and in the North Durham watershed. Development alternatives explored were conventional rural subdivision and rural villages.
Parcel Prioritization for the Blue Ridge Parkway's Scenic Conservation Effort, Watauga County, NC >
This GIS analysis of development trends, land values, visual sensitivity along the Blue Ridge Parkway's Corridor resulted in parcel prioritization for conservation efforts.
Triangle Visioning: Opportunities for Urban Nodes >
With forecasters predicting the addition of 600,000 people within the next generation, the Triangle Region expects growth and change. Photo realistic imaging and image layering techniques were used to visually demonstrate what this growth and change could look like.
Visual Sensitivity Mapping of Blue Ridge Parkway Viewsheds >
This ongoing project uses new mapping techniques to identify visible lands and their degree of visual exposure with respect to the Blue Ridge Parkway. Results are used to help prioritize surrounding lands for scenic conservation and to promote responsible land planning and design in critical scenic areas.


Sustainable Design & Watershed Planning

Development of Land Use Change Indicators to Support Watershed Based Restoration >
Very little is understood with regards to the effects of land use change and bacterial loading. This effort reports on approach to measure change to land cover and relate it to bacterial loading rates examining vegetative clearing, ditching, and impervious surface areas over the last 30 years.
Techniques to Restore Shellfish Resources in Jumping Run Creek >
This project is a watershed-based effort to investigate urban planning and design techniques that can be implemented to restore watershed hydrology and reduce shellfish closures. Cooperating partners include neighborhood businesses and citizens, Sea Grant, NC-CES SOD, BAE, Carteret County, NC-DENR-Shellfish Sanitation, Duke Marine Lab. Funded by NC-CWMTF.
Wilson Bay Storm Water Best Management Practice
and Sturgeon City >

Sturgeon City is an environmental education center and recreational park in Jacksonville, NC. Project efforts included conceptual programming / design, community design and education workshops, water quality monitoring, and implementation of stormwater BMPs.
