NC State Music Department names Dr. Peter Askim Director of Orchestral Activities

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: March 27, 2014 – NC State University, Raleigh NC


Dr. Peter AskimDr. Peter Askim has accepted the position of Director of Orchestral Activities beginning fall of 2014. Dr. Askim brings to the NC State Music Department a wealth of experience in orchestral conducting, composition and performance.


With two doctoral degrees in composition and performance, he founded and served as artistic director of the Institute at Music Mountain, where he conducted the orchestra and was the principal faculty member. He has also spent nine successful years as music director and composer-in-residence of the Idyllwild Arts Academy, where his work with student ensembles dramatically raised the visibility of the music program.


Dr. Tom Koch, interm director of the NC State music department, said, "Dr. Askim has dedicated his life to teaching talented young people and cultivating in them a sense of curiosity, an appreciation for the arts and a drive for excellence. We look forward to his bringing to the NC State Music Department this same commitment to teaching and mentoring."
