Diversity Programs

A diverse community consists of people with varied characteristics, ideas, and world views whose interactions both benefit and challenge each other to grow while making the community better. The Graduate School engages in activities designed to increase diversity at NC State and create a more inclusive and welcoming environment for the entire university community including:

• Developing and implementing comprehensive recruitment and retention programs such as the NIH-funded Initiative for Maximizing Student Diversity (IMSD), which provides mentoring, professional development opportunities, and funding to NC State undergraduate and graduate students to help increase diversity in doctoral education and the Ph.D. workforce in biomedical and behavioral sciences

• Participating in diversity-focused recruitment fairs and conferences nationally as well as in North Carolina

• Hosting campus visitation programs for prospective students in all fields of study once each semester

• Inviting Directors of Graduate Programs to submit nominations for supplemental Graduate School Diversity Enhancement Recruiting Fellowships to increase the amount funds offered to incoming graduate students

• Working with student organizations, such as NC State University’s chapter of the Society for the Advancement of Chicanos/Hispanics and Native Americans in the Sciences (SACNAS) and the Association for the Concerns of African American Graduate Students (ACAAGS), to support their efforts

• Initiating programs such as iREAD (Retaining, Encouraging, and Attaining higher Degrees among African American women graduate students in the sciences), which is designed as a support group to increase and extend the mentorship, professional development, and networking opportunities for African American graduate student women at NC State

• Providing current graduate students with the opportunity to apply for Diversity Enhancement Grants, supplemental fellowships up to $3,000 based on financial need

• Having “feeder” agreements with colleges and universities such as Florida Agricultural and Mechanical University, Tennessee State University, Fayetteville State University, Spelman College, and the University of Puerto Rico-Cayey

• Collaborating with and/or having membership in organizations such as the NC Louis Stokes Alliance for Minority Participation (NC-LSAMP), the National Physical Science Consortium (NPSC), and the National GEM Consortium
