Getting help

Take the training. Proper use of the HPC cluster requires some basic training. Before running jobs on the HPC, please
• Take the Basic HPC Training Workshop.
• See the Getting Started page or search the HPC website for additional documentation on specific topics.

Check cluster status. Before reporting a problem, please see the IT Service Portal to see if it may be a known or planned issue.

• Check the IT Service Portal for HPC to see if it may be a known or planned issue.
• Check the cluster monitoring pages to check for high utilization, either system-wide or by node/memory/interconnect.

Provide sufficient info. When emailing the help desk with errors, please include the following:
• A full screenshot of the terminal or browser window
• Input commands and error messages
• List any environment variables or modules set in the path. Use module list to show which modules are loaded
• For questions regarding runs, include the LSF JOBID, batch script submission file, and the output and error files, both from LSF and from the application

To request access to the HPC-VCL reservation, send email to oit_hpc@help.ncsu.edu. Note that HPC access is required before requesting HPC-VCL access.

Request a consultation

For a personal consultation on best compute practices for scientific modeling, optimization of workflows, advice on optimization, parallelization, or debugging, or any other issues, email oit_hpc@help.ncsu.edu with a brief description of an agenda along with proposed scheduling dates. Consultations will be held virtually.

Research Computing Interest Group

In collaboration with OIT and College of Sciences IT, the NC State University Libraries has launched an interest group and event series focused on research computing. Please share this announcement with others who might be interested in joining this group.

Bioinformatics Users Group

This group consists of NC State faculty, staff, and students who are using bioinformatics software. It will be used to organize and announce meetings and for users to exchange information and advice on using various bioinformatics applications.
